How it works

A private tunnel between two routers you own.

Ownhearth is built on WireGuard — the same fast, modern VPN technology used by serious privacy tools. The difference: instead of renting a slice of someone else's server, the whole thing runs on two small routers that belong to you.

The home box

One router stays plugged in at home. It becomes a private doorway back to your house. Because your traffic exits through your actual home internet, every website you visit sees your real, trusted home IP address — the one your bank already knows.

The travel box

The other router goes with you. Connect to its Wi‑Fi from any hotel, café, or office, and it builds an encrypted tunnel straight back to your home box. To everything you do online, it's as if you never left the living room.

The part everyone else gets wrong

These tunnels are notorious for silently dropping on flaky hotel Wi‑Fi. We ship a small self-healing watchdog that lives on your routers and quietly re-establishes the connection before you notice a drop. It's the reliability piece we built after a year of fighting this exact problem ourselves.

What we can and can't see

Your traffic flows directly between your two routers — it never passes through Ownhearth. We keep a tiny management channel so we can help your routers find each other and warn you if one goes offline. We can't see the websites you visit or anything you send.
